Hair, Eyes, Mouth: Black yarn wig, painted facial features with a closed sculpted mouth
Clothes: Orange leather shirt without a front closure, hand-painted and lined gold muslin pants with a leaf design, and stitched-on light-brown leather boots
Other: Varying shades of brown leather and suede created this handsome boy. The leather face is applied over a firm mold. The torso, arms, and legs are stuffed leather. The front of the torso is patchwork leather with suede on the sides that extends to the back. The lower half of the back is darker leather. The upper legs to the knees are suede. The lower legs and feet give the appearance of leather boots.
Born in Germany in 1944, Beate (Be-ott-ah) Schult is known for exquisite handcrafted leather dolls. An identical doll was sold by Theriault’s auction house. Described as “very rare and artfully created,” Theriault’s description indicates their doll was made in 1985 as part of “a series of international dolls—a black child, an Asian boy, and a white-complexioned child” (Theriault’s).
