Name: Susie
Made by and When: Unknown maker, made from a 1955 Coats and Clark pattern
Material: Brown cloth, yarn, stuffing, thread
Marks: Unmarked
Height: 14 inches
Hair, Eyes, Mouth: Black yarn hair styled in two side pigtails with bangs, brown embroidered side-glancing eyes, two black stitched dots for the nose, and a stitched circle mouth
Clothes: Susie wears a floral cotton blouse, a green corduroy skirt with a turquoise cotton belt, white cotton panties and socks, and black felt Mary-Jane-style shoes.
Other: Susie was lovingly made by an unknown doll maker from a 1955 Coats and Clark “Made to be Loved Dolls” sewing pattern (see the gallery picture). The pattern included six different dolls to make—Aiko, Bobby, Marilyn, Bill, Betty Ann, and Susie.
The blurry text from the pattern reads: Made to be Loved—they are irresistible and made by you. Scatter happiness with the work of your own clever fingers. Take your choice from this most adorable of [six dolls] and see what Mother’s scrap bag will yield for his hat or their clothes. The same body pattern will do for all the dolls, but you have a choice of three faces and four hairdos. The clothes are no trouble at all to make and see how cute they are.
