Name:  Whitney an All-leather Doll

Made by and When: Beate Schult

Material: Lambskin, kidskin, suede, mohair, paint, stuffing

Marks: (Head) BS / 88

Height: 20 inches

Hair, Eyes, Mouth: Hand-painted brown eyes, closed mouth with brown-outlined lips

Clothes: Wore a multicolored beaded necklace, otherwise arrived nude. According to the seller, “While Whitney comes with a stylized body rather than traditional clothing, her unique form allows for endless creative possibilities.” It is possible, however, that the artist did dress this doll. The curator fashioned a dress using a printed scarf and added a cowrie shell to the center of the necklace.

Other: This lovely doll is made of varying shades of brown leather and suede. The leather face is applied over a firm mold. The torso, arms, and legs are stuffed leather. The torso is patchwork leather. The upper legs to the knees are suede. The lower legs and feet give the appearance of leather boots.

The seller’s description invited the reader to “step into the world of unique artistry with Whitney, a truly special creation by renowned artist Beate (Be-ott-ah) Schult. Born in West Germany in 1944, Schult has poured her creativity and skill into this exquisite doll…” Whitney arrived with a doll documentation sheet written by the original owner.
